12 Days of Critical Peak Pricing

Imagine your utility warning you your electric bill is going to be even higher than usual and giving you a chance to do something about it. That's Critical Peak Pricing (CPP).

Twelve days per year (usually the hottest days) you’ll receive a notification that there will be a CPP Event and to cut your usage as much as possible during the 4-9pm peak period the following day.

For most utilities in Southern California, CPP is the default option, so if you’ve not done so already it’s a good idea to update the notifications settings on your online account. You can receive these notices by either email, text, or phone.

Have a Plan

The savings can be significant, but you have to have a plan in place for it to be effective. Here are some basic tips to get started:

  • Smart Thermostat: If you have a smart thermostat, it can be automatically connected to CPP notifications and adjust itself during this period. (You can also get a $75 rebate when you enroll).

  • Charge Batteries: Ensure anything using a battery is charged and can operate without electricity from 4pm.

  • Raise Thermostat: Raise cooling settings to 78°F.

  • Reduce Production: Or adjust operations to take place during off-peak hours, or to start earlier and finish at 4pm.

  • Switch Off Nonessentials: Turn off all nonessential items that require power. Developing a checklist of such items is good practice for such an event.
