Green Button Data: Simply and securely sharing energy data
Does your business have sustainability targets? Are you a supplier that must upgrade its energy infrastructure to maintain its place in the supply chain? Do you need assistance thumbing through the data?
A good place to start is always your utility bill.
It contains a lot of valuable information, if you know what to look for. Some utilites even tell you which 15-minute period was your costliest for the previous month! It gives you somewhere to start at least.
But for real in-depth analysis of your energy usage, you need to get your hands on your 15-minute interval data - or Green Button Data as it is sometimes known.
Your online utility account will host this data (unless you're in LADWP territory) and you can usually download it pretty easily.
Green Button Data is a coordinated effort by the energy industry that responds to a 2012 federal call-to-action to provide utility customers with easy and secure access to their energy usage information in a consumer-friendly format.
We use a program called Utility API, which allows you to share your usage data for the previous 12 months with us in a couple of clicks. It is super simple and super secure.
When we get it, we put it through our analytical model and dig through to find the waste and areas for improvement. Sometimes you just need someone to point it out! This alone typically saves between 8-12% when some basic patterns are identified and resolutions put into practice.
As utility costs continue to spike, let us know if you would like us to analyze your bills or Green Button Data. We are happy to help!
